We were alien to the idea to determine with a pen and coal in all the rich diversity and the fullness of the beautiful images of Gogol. We only wanted to give readers a suitable, not contrary to the spirit of the Gogol text, visual material, truthful, not flavored with either a caricature, or a cartoon and not embedded in the aatal-festive, but such that our memory retained from those years when we ourselves lived and lived and grew among places and types described by Gogol. And if our drawings help the reader more alive to be transferred to the same environment and the situation, if those household trifles and details that Gogol mentions in passing and which we plan to definitely complement this, we will consider our task to be fulfilled.
