Lew Wallace, an American writer, the author of the famous Ben-Gura, was first a lawyer, and then the governor and General of the Northerners during the civil war in the United States, then the messenger in Turkey, where the main action of the novel “The Fall of Constantinople” takes place. Work on the book cost the author six years of tireless labor. The plot is based on one of the most amazing events in world history - the capture of Byzantium by the Turks. According to Wallace, it was difficult to find a more suitable canvas for a work that became an amazing alloy of historical facts and fiction, reality and myth. “I tried to present the correct picture of the struggle of opposite civilizations that collided when taking Constantinople, although I gave the scope of fantasy, but within the limits of sober study of historical truth,” the author admitted.
For the first time in Russian, the novel was published with abbreviations in 1896 under the name The Fall of Constantinople. In this edition, the novel is published in a new full translation
