Yuri Karlovich Olesha (1899-1960) - "The man is enchantically gifted, he did not become a writer, but became immediately ..." Enjoy "gasped in literary and magazine circles" (Alla Bossart) The debut novel of the young Odessa, who had moved to the capital, was immediately proclaimed criticism by one of the tops of Soviet literature. And what is important: this assessment is not disputed to this day. Moreover, attentive readers today find unexpected artistic insights in the novel. For example, it was Olesha, who described the successful and purposeful catering worker Andrei Babichev, who created the metaphor of the future Soviet system - the image of sausage as a symbol of life well -being. Olesha’s literary biography developed as if backward: after the success of "envy" it became possible to publish the previously written romantic fairy tale "Three fat men" - about the revolutionary impulse of the people who overthrew the power of the bourgeois. The villains are arrested, the dreams of “sausage socialism” are not yet relevant, the future is drawn by pink and blue ... The future of Yuri Olesha himself was not so rosy: he fell silent until the end of his life.
