The amazing inimitable talent of N. Gogol was necessary to comprehend the fate of Russia, because “no one better understood all the shades of Russian life and Russian character, no one so amazingly correctly portrayed Russian society” (D. Pisarev) His "evenings near Dikanka" admired A. Pushkin, their sincerity, ease, unusualness. And the plot donated by Pushkin, which formed the basis of the comedy "Examiner", was embodied so brilliantly that it was still relevant and makes the reader sincerely and homerically laugh and surprise the reliability, vitality of the described situations. "In" Dead Souls", the author took such a great step that everything, hitherto written by him, seems weak and pale in comparison with them, ”Belinsky wrote about Gogol"s immortal creation. The book also includes "selected places from correspondence with friends"- a kind of sensational testament of the writer. Indeed, speaking with the words of N. Chernyshevsky: "... for a long time there was no longer in the world of a writer who would be as important for his people as Gogol for Russia.
