Above his first great work "Dead Souls" (1842) N.V. Gogol worked intensely and painfully, then burning, then again restoring the pages of the manuscript. The author decided to create an epic in three volumes, but the second volume destroyed it (in our publication the surviving drafts of the second volume are given), but did not have time to write the third. The first volume was written abroad, which allowed Gogol to look at the events in Russia from the side, to evaluate them, comparing them, and as a result to achieve the strongest impact on the reader with the ironic image of the dead demarcity of life "
