Alexey Ivanovich Svirsky (before the baptism of Shimon Dovid Vigdorovich) was born in a poor Jewish family (his father was a roofer at a tobacco factory, mother of a servant) From the age of 12, Svirsky traveled throughout Russia, was in Persia and Turkey, visited prisons, night houses and brothels. He worked as a port loader, harness in the Donetsk mines, a laborery on Baku tower, vineyards and tobacco plantations of the Caucasus and Bessarabia.
The first poem of Svirsky, dedicated to the memory of A. Koltsov, was printed in 1892 in the newspaper Rostov N /D Izvestia. Since then, Svirsky began to regularly write essays "from a bosom life". The first books are the "Rostov slums", "in prisons and vertups", "dead people" ...
A special place in the work of Svirsky is occupied by the theme of children and adolescents of the city outskirts. So, in the work "Children of the street", the author describes the life of a poor children, forced to get a piece of bread from an early age in a fierce struggle. And the main creative success of Svirsky is rightfully considered the story "Ryzhik" about the wanderings of a little street girl. Delassing the romance of vagrancy, showing the fatality of the "bottom", Svirsky speaks of the need to fight for his life, to be right for people - one of the heroes of the story, dying, says: “There is no need to live like that. Understand, we walked near our lives, but in the middle there weren’t ... work ... be useful to others ... Here is happiness ... no need to stagger ... "
