The story "Cancer Corps" was conceived by Solzhenitsyn in the summer of 1954 in Tashkent, where after the exile it was treated in an oncological dispensary. The memories of this formed the basis of the story.
Its heroes are patients of the "cancer corps". Among them are people of all social strata, ages from all over the vast country. Their fate reflected that state of Soviet society when, struck by the lawlessness of power, as a terrible illness, it received hope of healing.
The position of the author in the work diverged abruptly with an official ideology, so the writer was able to publish it only abroad. In his homeland, the story was first published in 1990
