This collection includes two stories of the Russian writer Nikolai Semenovich Leskov (1831–1895), telling about moral searches and exploits of early Christians. “Subrasthokhu Pamphalon” (the work was first published in the journal “Historical Bulletin” in 1887) is the story of the search for the Hermit of people who “the essence of God who are pleasing and the eternity of those who have rewarded”. The voice from above leads him to Damascus to a buffoone of Pamphalon, far from a saint to a person. However, after he tells Ermia the story of his life, the hermit’s views on what holiness and service to his neighbor are radically changing. The story “Beautiful Aza” (first published in the newspaper “New Time” in 1888) introduces the reader to the life of a rich Egyptian woman, who seduced his wealth for the sake of saving a stranger, having become a harlot, but subsequently repented and came to God. Both of these works were written by N.S. Leskov for stories from the Prologue - the Old Russian Life Collection of the XII - XIII century
