The novel "Black Woman" (1834) is the main work of the writer, publicist, journalist and philologist Nikolai Ivanovich Grech (1787-1867), one of the outstanding phenomena of the Pushkin era. The grandiose in the plan, the novel covers three decades of the Russian life of the turn of the two great centuries and after the Eugene Onegin is worthy to be called the "encyclopedia of Russian life".
Looking back at the German Gothic tradition (Shnis, Vulpius, Tsshkuka), Greek adopts her ideas and images - and skillfully takes holds on Russian soil. All the main components of the Gothic novel: wonderful meetings, prophecies, obsession, Masonic secrets, Mesteric experiments and animal magnetism are the main fashion of the era, and in the center of the plot - the story of a person who was predicted that he would not gain happiness somewhere, but " in a coffin". Numerous characters are drawn into the cycle of events, behind which the image of a black woman hangs - something difficult: either the personification of children"s horror, or a kind genius -guardian, but maybe the embodiment of the omnipotent providence. A masterfully tailored plot attracts the reader according to the labyrinth of mysterious events, the stories of which by the plump novels are skillfully woven into the fabric of the narrative: prophetic dreams, insights, predictions, rumors about a fiery snake flying at midnight above St. Petersburg, a premonition of ambulance ...
scope "Black Woman" is impressive: Pugacheva’s riot, earthquake in Lisbon, departure from the life of Catherine P, the French Revolution, War in Italy, fights on the Caucasian border
The Essay Ossetian Essay was included in the section "additions". Senkovsky with an analysis of animal magnetism in the novel and the first Russian translation of the novel P. Merima about the vision of Charles XI, on which Greek relied.
Greek will plunge into the history of life and work of Greek, and will allow detailed chronology, saturated with quotes and memories of contemporaries about it.
The publication of the "Black Woman" continues the line of Gothic novels, begun in the series "Literary Monuments" in 1967 Tom "Fantastic Tales" ("Castle Otranto" G. Walpol, "Love Devil" J. Kazota, "Vatek" . Bekford) and continued by the "manuscript found in Saragos" Y. Pototsky (1968), "Melmot with a wanderer" Ch.-r. Matyurin (1970), "Italian" A. Radcliff (2009), "Dukhovidian" Fr. Schiller, "Genius" K. Gross," Abellino "G. Tsshkuk (2009)," Frankenstein "and the Last Man" M. Shelly (2011), and, finally, a very recent publication (2019) - N.I. Roman Gnedich "Don-Korrado de Herrera" and the tragedy V.T. The adversary "dead castle", standing at the origins of the Russian Gothic tradition.
Amazing and undoubtedly the most popular novel by N.I. Grech, for the first time so carefully published, accompanied by a detailed comment, is right back to the Russian -speaking reader
