On December 16, 1944, Hitler began his last operation on the border of Belgium and Germany, in snowy forests and gorges of Ardenn. He believed that he could split the allies, advanced to Antwerp himself, and then force them to refuse to participate in the war. Hitler chose Ardenne as a place for a breakthrough, as he remembered the success of the 1940 attack on this sector and wanted to repeat it. The American troops captured by surprise collided with two tank armies. Fights in the Ardennes were fought with cruelty, which the Western Front had not yet seen.
