An epic narrative of the relocation of peasant families from Transbaikalia and the central regions of Russia on the uninhabited expanses of the Amur region in the second half of the nineteenth century. A penetrating story about how many difficulties had to endure the first settlers in order to defeat the wild nature, to uproach the taiga, adapt to the harsh climate and grow bread on the land that did not know the plow. Heat, with a deep understanding of the psychology of his heroes, the author writes how the relations of Novoselov with the indigenous people of Amur were formed. The writer"s sympathies are on the side of people of strong, energetic, living according to the laws of conscience, who can remain human in the most difficult life situations. The artist also reveals the process of spiritual impoverishment of the personality, when a person takes possession of the thirst for profit, predation, when greed breaks his soul.
