The book of Professor of the Moscow Spiritual Academy A.P. Lebedeva (1845-1908) is a continuation of his work on the history of the Byzantine Church in the IX-XI centuries. Following the same plan as in the previous book, the author aims to highlight the religious life of the Byzantine society over the four centuries. It was a very difficult period in the history of Byzantium. On the one hand, it takes a decline of its political importance and the level of state life, and on the other, it is a period of lifting the Byzantine spirituality and education (the so-called "Comninovsky" and "Paleologovsky" revival) A.P. Lebedev is considering the inner life of the Byzantine Church in all its aspects - the relationship between the church and the state in theory and in practice, the moral state of society in this period, the state of Byzantine education, the material and moral position of the clearing. The vivid characteristics of the emperors and Constantinople patriarchs significantly revive the story.
