The collection of articles "Hidden facets of tradition" touches on topics from the history of Russian public thought and politics that have always been on the periphery of attention of researchers. The themes of self-government in ancient Russian cities, the places and roles of pagan beliefs in the Christian world, and the culture of laughter in public life have always caused a certain skepticism in academic science, primarily due to a lack of sources. However, with a careful and scrupulous approach, some information can be obtained, and a significant help here will be provided by the analysis of chronicle and folklore materials. How were interethnic (interconfessional) relations formed in Ancient Rus? When did a priest have to resort to pagan rituals? Why is the mermaid-"drowned woman" so cheerful and sexually preoccupied?
