These two novellas by the French classic Gustave Flaubert, "Herodias" and "The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller," were so liked by the Russian classic Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev that he wanted to translate them into Russian himself.
"Herodias" is based on the Gospel story of the beheading of John the Baptist. And "The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller" tells how a terrible crime, committed by mistake, led a man to sainthood.
In this book, both these novellas are presented in the translation by I. S. Turgenev.
