Hero of Our Time

So many literary characters over the past two centuries have lost relevance and been consigned to literary oblivion, yet Pechorin, the "superfluous man," a cold cynic who does not believe in lofty ideals, living "not with the heart, but with the head," a selfish liver of life who abandons women and fearlessly tests fate, remains more alive than all the living. This is a contradictory and ambiguous personality, as Lermontov wrote the first psychological novel in Russian prose. Try to understand impartially - do you agree with the critics who wrote that such a depraved hero is an insult to Russia, or are you on Belinsky's side, confident that Lermontov showed the tragedy of educated people of that (and perhaps our?) time?
