Marguerite of Navarre (1492–1549) was a French princess, one of the first female writers in France, a patron of the arts and sciences, a poet, prose writer, religious mystic, author of philosophical dialogues, poems, and plays. However, for many centuries she has been celebrated for her work "The Heptameron" - a classic of Renaissance literature, a collection of novellas inspired by Boccaccio's "Decameron". Here, ten people, temporarily cut off from the world, entertain themselves and each other by telling instructive, funny, cruel, candid, touching stories - stories that are halfway between parables and gossip, tales of love, betrayal, honor, and deceit. Reflecting on their characters, on their lowest or highest spiritual aspirations, the storytellers - some of whom are Marguerite of Navarre's alter egos, as well as figures borrowed from her friends and relatives - involuntarily partly reveal their own souls, and together with them we grasp the complexity of human nature.
