Author: Shmelev I.S., "Heavenly Paths": Ivan Sergeevich Shmelev (1873-1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on the spirituality of the Russian people. While in emigration, "he never stops thinking about Russia and agonizing over its misfortunes for a moment in his spiritual fervor." In the novel "Heavenly Paths," the concept of the third volume of which was never realized due to the writer's death, the real story of love between the engineer V.A. Veidengammer and the novice of the Passion Monastery Darinka Koroleva, who left her cloister for him, is reflected. Thanks to this meeting, the religious skeptic-positivist Victor unexpectedly discovered a world previously unknown to him. Supported by his beloved, strong in spirit and sincere in her faith, he was able to embark on the path of enlightenment. The author realistically depicted the development of spiritual feeling, which began with the understanding of sin redemption and repentance and led to the Source of life. The disclosure of the destinies and characters of the heroes was based on an ascetic worldview, the traditions of which were not inherent in secular culture of the 19th-20th centuries.
