“To have and not have” (1937) is the story of Harry Morgan, a simple and honest fisherman who turns into a smugglers. The story is based on the fate of the protagonist who has become a criminal. But besides this, “to have and not have” is an acute novel, in the center of which is a conflict of poverty and wealth that have and do not have, people whom poverty forces the law, and people who enjoy life and burn it. Which of them is more worthy of censure?
