The book is dedicated to the development of various types of land and river transport in Moscow in the 19th - early 20th centuries, when the city's transportation system was undergoing radical transformation. The essays are based on pre-revolutionary archival documents and articles from the periodical press. They describe the details of the construction of intra-city and suburban roads, a number of bridges, movement along the Moscow River, paving, operation of horse-drawn carriages, stagecoaches, and trams, competitions on the first automobiles, rules for pedestrians and transport passengers.
