"...None of his works Kalinin wrote with such passionate and selfless dedication as his novel about Klavdiya and Budula," recalls the writer's daughter Natalia Kalinina. The first part of the novel, originally conceived as a novella, was published in 1961 in the magazine "Ogonek," and the last - the ninth - in 2011 after the author's death. For over forty years, Kalinin repeatedly returned to his characters, their difficult love story, and their fate was followed by millions of readers and viewers. The novel has been adapted for the screen multiple times, several theatrical productions have been based on it, a romantic opera has been written, and its characters have truly become beloved and familiar to the people. In this edition, the full text of the novel is presented with an introduction by Natalia Kalinina, in which the writer's daughter reminisces about her father and tells the story of the creation of his most famous work.
