The famous novel by the master of "grotesque realism" Yuri Polyakov, "The Gypsum Piper," has no analogues in contemporary Russian literature in terms of entertainment, genre uniqueness, or breadth of themes. This "ironic epic," as critics have called it, combines elements of detective fiction, love story, psychological novel, social satire, and with its abundance of brilliant insert novellas, it is reminiscent of "The Decameron." As always, the author captivates the reader with a virtuosic plot, conquers with vivid and complex characterizations, delights with a sharp ironic style, amazes with unexpected metaphors and aphorisms, and excites with refined eroticism. The second book includes the third and fourth parts of the novel - "The Adulteress and the Adulterer" and "The Feast of the Vanquished," as well as an epilogue that ties together all the numerous narrative threads and is titled by the author as "The End of the Film." The volume concludes with a selection of "Thus Spoke Saint-John Perse," beloved aphorisms extracted from the text of the ironic epic.
