Hryhoriy Ivanovych Kotovsky was a legend both under the tsarist and Soviet authorities. In the Russian Empire, he was one of the recognized leaders of the criminal world, known in Bessarabia as the "local Robin Hood" and the "ataman of Hell." After 1917, he became a legendary commander of the Red Army and a national hero of the Civil War, a member of the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR, as well as one of the leaders of the Ukrainian, Moldovan, and Union Central Executive Committee. Historian Boris Sokolov shows which of the numerous myths surrounding Grigory Kotovsky's name correspond to reality and which have little to do with him. The author elaborates on well-known episodes in the biography of the main character of this book, such as his participation in the occupation of Odessa in the winter of 1920 and the fight against the Antonov uprising in the Tambov province in the summer of 1921. The reasons for his popularity are explained, and an attempt is made to uncover the motives behind his mysterious murder. The reflection of Kotovsky's image in Viktor Pelevin's novel "Chapayev and Void" and in cinema is also traced. Kotovsky's biography is presented against the backdrop of the history of Russia in the first quarter of the 20th century, including the so-called "Bessarabian question."
