S.D. Eryzha (Nefedov) was born on 27 (according to other sources of October 28) in October 1876 in the village of Baevo Alatyrsky district of Mordovia. The spiritual skill of the sculptor, a rare poetic gift, deep psychologism and the original way of artistic embodiment put Erzu on a par with the outstanding sculptors of the 20th century. In his work, the sculptor relied on the best traditions of world culture, while remaining in his attitude by Mordvin, elusive threads associated with his native Mordovia. Early discovering the ability to draw and modeling, Stepan Eryza becomes an icon painter, having gone for this a school in the icon -painting workshops of Alatyr and Kazan
