Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (1890-1958) was the daughter of Greek Princess Alexandra and Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich, the younger son of Alexander III, and the cousin of the last Russian Emperor. She was raised with her brother Dmitry in the family of Moscow's Governor-General Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna. Her brother, Dmitry Pavlovich, was one of Rasputin's assassins. Maria herself was a Swedish duchess, head of the fashion house 'Kitmir' in Paris, a photographer, and an artist. After fleeing Bolshevik Russia, she lived in London, Paris, America, and Argentina, and passed away in 1958. In exile, she wrote two memoirs - 'In Russia' and 'In Exile' (both of which make up this book), which sparked mixed reactions and much discussion among the Russian emigre community. There are few royals who, when thrown into harsh everyday life, consistently find unconventional solutions - Maria Pavlovna's resilience and resourcefulness were truly unique.
