In the late 1890s, the author of a series of scientific ethnographic works, Yevgeny Alexandrovich Lyatsky (1868-1942), gained wide recognition as a literary critic. His articles were published in many periodicals. For example, in the early 1900s, a major article about the Russian writer Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov was published in the 'Vestnik Evropy' magazine. It became a starting point for Lyatsky's subsequent books on the works of I. A. Goncharov. The third edition of the book of critical and biographical essays dedicated to the life and work of the author of the famous novel 'Oblomov' is presented to the readers. Yevgeny A. Lyatsky focuses on the role of the personal element in Goncharov's works and the predominance of the subjective element in the writer's creativity.
