This unique book with a truly whimsical and dramatic fate reached readers after many years. The trial edition of Gogol's biography in the "Lives of Distinguished People" series, signed in 1934, was banned because the author of the biography, the prominent writer and publicist Alexander Voronsky, was repressed. By a miracle, several copies of this edition survived.
Voronsky's book is intended for a wide range of readers. It recreates a vivid image of Gogol as a person and a writer. His literary works interest the biographer primarily in the way they reflect the personality of the creator. Gogol, in Voronsky's eyes, possesses a kind of "double vision," allowing him, on the one hand, to see the "materiality of the world" with astonishing sharpness, and on the other hand, to perceive the spiritual growth of a person.
