The first 14 volumes of the "general maritime list were compiled at the end of the XIX - early XX centuries. A team of qualified historians (officers) for more than 30 years. They were made a huge amount of work with the maximum development of identified documents. Since then, numerous publications of research on the biographies of sailors of the Russian Fleet, their pedigree (genealogy), encyclopedias and reference books have emerged.
Especially a lot of biographical research has been published in the last 25 years in the collections of "Gangeut", "Kortik", "Citadel", "Andreevsky Flag", magazines "Marine Collection", "Maritime Heritage" and others. Regarding the history of the officer"s corps of the Russian Fleet of the XIX-XX centuries. The most significant are the publications of S. A. Gladkiki, A. Yu. Yemelin, V. L. Lobachyn, A. M. Pozharsky, Yu. L. Korshunova, V. N. Photoanza, as well as many other researchers.
Their appearance makes it possible to correct and supplement the first volumes of the "general maritime list" and continue his edition to the end of the reign of Emperor Nikolai P. Initiative in the organization of such work was manifested by the publishing house "Atlant" represented by his director D. A. Fedurin and chief editor V. E. Tumanovsky. To date, 14 volumes have been published, in general, repeating the former editions with some additions.
XV-XVI volume is prepared a new team of compilers. They are devoted to the reign of Emperor Alexander II and include a list of officers whose names began with the letters "to" to the letter "I". Since the compilers and publishers were associated with the terms of the volume of volumes to light, it was not possible to organize many years of research work
