Georgy Nikolaevich Vladimov (1931–2003) was a writer and human rights activist. He was a laureate of the Russian Booker Prize. His novel "The General and His Army" is considered the "War and Peace" of the 20th century and is one of the most important books about the Great Patriotic War. Just as the fates of three generals - Guderian, Vlasov, and the fictional Kobrisov - intertwine in the novel, the author combines the personal and the historical, valor and betrayal, victory and defeat. In 2001, in Russia, "The General and His Army" was named the best Booker Prize novel of the decade and was awarded the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Civil Courage of a Writer.
