The name of the American writer Theodore Dreiser is familiar to readers around the world primarily thanks to his famous novels, among which are "Sister Carrie", "Jennie Gerhardt", "The Genius", "An American Tragedy", and others. Meanwhile, Dreiser was also a very prolific short story writer. His creative legacy includes dozens of brilliant stories and sketches, many of which are autobiographical and sometimes anticipate the themes and conflicts of his major works.
"Gallery of Women" features fifteen different heroines, each with her own fate and life drama, fifteen captivating stories written by a deep connoisseur of human nature, a vivid, truthful artist, and an engaging storyteller.
In the collection "Chains of Happiness", the author's attention is focused on the inner experiences of the characters, some of whom are desperately trying to escape from poverty and are ready to do a lot for it, while others have achieved wealth and high status in society but do not feel happy, the tragedies of individual people serve as instructive stories about the transience of worldly goods. In this edition, Dreiser's collections of short prose are presented in the form they were intended by the author, with most of the stories published in new translations.
