Pierre de Bourdeille, seigneur de Brantôme (circa 1540-1614), served the French kings, was known for his wit and sharp tongue at court, traveled throughout Europe, participated in the Religious Wars, did not amass great wealth or high titles, ended up lonely in old age, but history remembered him as a memoirist, chronicler of court life, and one of the most popular writers of the French Renaissance. Among his works are biographies of kings and military leaders of France, but his most famous book remains "The Gallant Ladies." Sometimes sarcastic, often humorous, always candid stories about the lives of high society ladies and gentlemen who enthusiastically and easily give in to passions, anecdotes about unnamed but known to researchers and contemporaries historical figures, sharp remarks about human nature, a joyful and carefree readiness to enjoy life regardless of anything - "The Gallant Ladies" was written by a man who deeply understood the psychology of amorous relationships, a selfless wit, and a brilliant lover of life.
