The basics of mechanics of materials are presented: the theory of deformation of a continuous medium, balance laws determining equations. Direct tensor calculus is used, with necessary information provided. Finite deformations of elastic bodies in material description are considered, as well as fluid flow and plastic media, with differential and integral variational principles highlighted. Intended as a textbook for students of higher educational institutions studying technical specialties. The guide may be useful for graduate students and engineers studying mechanics of materials.
