This book is about the theory and history of writing. The origin of the earliest-non-alphabetical-writing systems in the Middle East (such as cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphs) now looks different in the light of new discoveries. Relatively recently it turned out, for example, that almost ten thousand years ago, to count the heads of livestock or grain measures, made small sculptural figures: balls, cones, pyramids. When shipping with a messenger, the figures themselves were put into envelopes, and on the envelope - in order to avoid fraud - the same geometric images were imposed. So from the prints of the figures on clay there is a cuneiform. Millennia have gone to this process. The ancient letter of the front Asia in many features coincides not only with similar types of letters in the East (China), but also with the characteristics of Mayan hieroglyphs. Is the similarity of the systems removed from each other with distribution from one center? Future will tell. The later writing system is alphabetical - developing inside the hieroglyphic, in fact, differs from it. The differences between alphabetical and non -fabric systems of writing are devoted to most of the book. The letter of writing is a very personal issue. Therefore, the discoveries and decryptions of individual languages (small and central Asia) are described against the background of his own scientific biography. A huge role in the development of this interesting field is given to many outstanding Russian scientists of the two past centuries. In the epilogue, different writing systems are correlated with the work of certain zones of the brain according to modern neuropsychology. The book includes the tasks of decryption - a lesson that cannot but captivate anyone. After all, decryption is a real detective. It underlies the study of all writing systems. But in general, the book immerses the reader into a huge layer of cultural history
