The book presents episodes from the history of the confrontation between two political forces in Russia in the 19th century - government censorship and the public press. The authors analyze the legal status of the press during the reign of Emperors Alexander I (Charter of 1804), Nicholas I (Charters of 1826 and 1828), the results of the revision of censorship legislation under Alexander II, the practices of censors who belonged to the literary community (S. T. Aksakov, S. N. Glinka, V. V. Izmaylov, and others), as well as the position of public figures, journalists, and editors of various ideological currents in the capital's periodicals, including Russian socialists in exile. Despite the selectivity of the topics, they allowed to reproduce the sharpness and boundaries of both sides of the conflict and the vector of its development towards the end of the 19th - early 20th centuries in a comprehensive picture. The book will be useful for historians, literary scholars, journalists, as well as a wide range of readers interested in issues of press freedom, censorship, and their history.
