The book presents episodes of the history of the confrontation between the two political forces of Russia of the XIX century. - Government censorship and public press. The authors analyze the legal status of the press in the reign of emperors Alexander I (Charter of 1804), Nicholas I (Charters of 1826 and 1828), the results of a revision of censorship legislation under Alexander II, the practice of censors belonging to the writer"s community (S. T. Aksakova, S. N. Glinka, V.V. Izmailov and others), as well as the position of public figures, publicists, editors of the capital"s periodicals of various ideological movements, including Russian socialists who were in emigration. Despite the selectivity of the plots, they made it possible to reproduce the sharpness and boundaries of the demarcation of both sides of the conflict and the vector of its development by the end of the 19th - beginning of the XX centuries in the whole picture.
