The book is dedicated to the little-studied issue in world historiography - how did people orient themselves in space in archaic cultures, what significance the features of their body structure, the Earth's layout, and the movement of celestial bodies, primarily the Sun and the Moon, had in this orientation, how astronomical landmarks of the world's countries were established, what role orientation towards the cardinal points played in the sacred and profane life of society (orientation of cities, temples, palaces, dwellings, burials, cult actions, geographical maps, etc.). The research is conducted on the material of practically all archaic cultures of Eurasia - from China to Rome and from ancient Celts to Mongols - using all types of sources: linguistic, literary, archaeological, iconographic, ethnographic, etc. An anthropological perspective on the nature of human spatial orientation allows to identify universal categories in the understanding of space and to come close to the comprehension of the most common archetypes of homo sapiens consciousness.
