In March 2024, the prison system of Russia will celebrate its 145th anniversary. Alexander Naumov headed the press service of the Main Directorate for the Execution of Punishments (GUIN) in the Irkutsk region for over 10 years. Based on secret documents from the archives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, conversations with the head of Ozerny labor camp, as well as numerous interviews with GUIN employees, the author tells the story of the prison case in Russia.
The largest penal colony of the Russian Empire - Alexandrovsky Central - was established in 1873 in the village of Alexandrovskoye (76 km northwest of Irkutsk). It housed political and criminal offenders who were sent from the European part of Russia to forced labor in Eastern Siberia. Among those who passed through it were: F. Dzerzhinsky (1902), M. Frunze (1914), S. Ordzhonikidze (1915-16), and others.
In 1948, the former Alexandrovsky Central was renamed Ozerny labor camp - it was intended for the punishment of those convicted under Article 58 (political). Among those who served their sentences in Ozerny were: singer Lyudmila Ruslanova, intelligence officer Dmitry Bystroletov, and others.
