In one of the old districts of St. Petersburg, children are disappearing. The investigation leads to a psychiatric hospital, the peculiar house of a famous director, the museum-palace of a grand duke, and a small shop called "24 hours." Each of the main characters - a detective, a museum guard, and a socialite psychologist - experiences events that can be seen as mystical mysteries, delusions of a disturbed mind, or real interventions of ancient past in modern life. Despite the captivating detective plot, the novel is serious - a reflection on what is happening in our world right now. About lost and stolen children. About eccentrics who are scared of their own inventions, but show remarkable fearlessness in the face of real dangers. Those who are afraid to leave the house or kiss a girl, but calmly stand in front of a gun. The novel is about psychologists and psychiatrists, investigators and suspects, about the dead who return to seek revenge on the living. And of course, about St. Petersburg and love.
