The era of the second temple and the period of Mishnah and Talmud can be safely called the "axial time" not only of Jewish, but also in world history, which determined the fate of European and Middle Eastern civilizations. The beginning of this temporary segment is set by the emergence of a biblical canon, the middle is the emergence of Christianity and the destruction of the second temple, the end is the design of rabbinistic Judaism and its fundamental documents: the Mishnah and the Babylonian Talmud. The proposed book by Lawrence Schiffman was written as a textbook for students studying Jewish history and culture. The author is a professor at the Department of Judaic of New York University. The main subject of his research is the manuscript of the Dead Sea and their connection with later rabbinistic literature
