This book will discuss monuments and murals, mosaics and reliefs, environmental objects and installations, street design and graffiti created over the past hundred years. For the first time, the environmental art of the Northern capital is presented in its entirety in a global context. Public art in the book is 'captured' on the outskirts, when the first manifestations of 'participation culture' appeared in St. Petersburg. The author seeks to combine an art historical approach with a socio-anthropological one: attempting to examine the representation of mass moods and expectations, the technique of visual messages of power, and reactions to them. The genre of the book is very flexible. It contains elements of a historical and artistic guide, with a certain navigation in time and space outlined. However, factual and local history interests are far from being a priority... A fairly coherent picture of dominant artistic styles is presented: from Art Nouveau to several versions of Constructivism and Post-Constructivism, including Leningrad Art Deco. Alongside works by major masters, attention is also paid to rather ordinary art production: sometimes typological things represent the time and dominant style no less than masterpieces.
