The monograph examines and considers all mentions of ancient Slavs in the works of domestic historians from the late 17th to the mid-18th century through the prism of modern knowledge. It discusses the "Kievan Synopsis," the "Scythian History" by Andrey Lyzlov, the "Core of Russian History" by Andrey Mankiev, the "Detailed Chronicle from the Beginning of Russia to the Battle of Poltava" by Feofan Prokopovich, articles by historian Gotlieb Bayer, books by Vasily Tatishchev and Mikhail Lomonosov. Along the way, many myths of historiography are analyzed (Slavic origin of the Veneti, widespread past settlement of Finnish tribes in Eastern Europe, the "Muscovite myth," etc.). The book contains numerous references to archaeological, linguistic, and anthropological data, presents modern historical conclusions on various issues related to ancient Slavs and their neighbors. This edition can be called a selective overview of knowledge about ancient Slavs, their history, ethnogenesis, and presumed ancestral homeland. The author puts forward a number of bold hypotheses that address the challenges facing historians and open up new horizons for research.
