The Great Game - that's what politicians of past eras called the strategic confrontation between Russia and England in Central Asia in the 18th-19th centuries. By the 1870s, the Great Game covered a large part of Central Asia. During this time, Russia and England expanded their territories and fortified their borders. While Russia consistently advanced southward, incorporating the Bukhara, Khiva, and Kokand khanates, England made every effort to capture Afghanistan. Eventually, the moment came when the geopolitical interests of both powers intersected, and the question arose of establishing clear boundaries of influence. Bloody battles and secret operations of spies from both countries began, followed by delicate and exhausting diplomatic work. The book by the well-known writer-historian Vladimir Shigin is dedicated to the events unfolding in the offices of St. Petersburg, London, and Calcutta, armed clashes in the mountains and gorges of Afghanistan, in the Kazakh steppes and deserts of Turkestan, on the icy peaks of the Pamirs.
