French literature of the 1830s-1840s. 'Second prose'

The collection of articles analyzes the works of L. Gozlan, K. Thil, F. Sully, E. Sue, A. de Latouche, M. Debord-Valmore, A. de Custine, M. D'Agou, and other writers. The thematic and genre features of their works, as well as personal and creative relationships between the writers, are examined. The authors attempt to answer questions such as: how did the prose of the "second tier" enrich French literature, what are the strengths and weaknesses of these writers' works, what is their contribution to the development of Romanticism, and what is the reason for the incredible success and subsequent rapid oblivion of some of them. An important issue is addressed regarding the boundary between "second-tier" literature and "paraliterature," i.e. mass literary production. For philologists and all those interested in French literature.
