A poignant, incredibly lyrical autobiographical narrative about the difficult post-war childhood of an inquisitive, very capable, 'headstrong', and, as it turned out later, talented eleven-year-old boy, who is actually the author himself, a boy from a village where there is only a primary school and whose childhood fell during the war, famine, and devastation.
The boy and his younger sister try to satisfy their hunger by eating raw potatoes, hoping to grow a harvest in their stomachs and not feel hungry, but for some reason the potatoes do not grow. And hunger does not let go.
It is fortunate that at this moment, a caring adult - a teacher - appears on the boy's path, who is forced to study in the city and misses his family. Very delicately, without humiliating the little man's human dignity, she helps him not to die of hunger.
