Why are banking systems in some countries stable, and in others - not? The United States survived twelve system banking crises since 1840, while in Canada there was not a single one. Banking systems Mexico and Brazil experienced crises and at the same time did not provide any significant loans to the population and enterprises. Analyzing several centuries of political and banking history of Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Mexico and Brazil, this book shows that chronic banking crises and loan deficiency were not an accident. Calomiris and Habert combine the political history and economy, showing how the coalitions of politicians, bankers and other groups acting in the interests of certain circles are formed, why they are preserved and how they pursue a policy that determines who will become a banker, who gets access to loans and who who will be accessed and who He will pay for the salvation of banks
