The composer Arnold Schoenberg's (1874–1951) path began with writing songs—a genre that went through all of his work. Schoenberg turned to the texts of more than fifty poets, paying special attention to the poems of R. Dehmel, S. George, and G. Keller. Schoenberg's early song compositions were inspired by the chamber vocal heritage of J. Brahms. The collection includes three early works: Four Songs Op. 2 (1899), Six Songs Op. 3 (1899–1903), Eight Songs Op. 6 (1904).
