The outstanding Russian and Soviet historian A.E. Presnyakov (1870–1929) explores the internal structure of the Vladimir Grand Duchy and the relations between the appanage princes, descendants of Vsevolod the Big Nest, in the pages of his book. He describes the struggle between Tver and Moscow for the grand princely rule of "all of Russia." Professor Presnyakov traces the development of the grand princely policy of Ivan Danilovich Kalita, aimed at concentrating power in the hands of the Moscow ruler, and sheds light on the process of uniting the lands of Northeastern Russia and the formation of the Great Russian state.
