John Donne is a famous English metaphysical poet and theologian, rightfully included in the "Brodsky list".
The book includes John Donne's prose texts dedicated to reflections on life, death, and immortality, on the transience and predestination of being.
"Appeal to the Lord in a time of need and distress" is one of the brightest literary monuments of the era, combining a diary, medical bulletin, philosophical work, theological treatise, and prayer book. Donne, having fallen ill with a severe fever, approached the very edge of the grave and only by a miracle remained alive. The experience of approaching death, documented step by step, became the basis for the "Appeals to the Lord…".
"The Struggle with Death, or Consolation of the Soul" is the last sermon of John Donne, delivered a few days before his death and therefore called "a funeral speech to himself".
