Jules Verne was one of the few people who managed to bring his childhood dreams of travel to life. From Nantes, where the future writer was born in 1828, to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, there were only 50 km. From the banks of the Loire River, where his father had a country house, the masts of ships could be seen. Jules' father wanted his son to become a lawyer, but the young man's aversion to this imposed choice led him to pursue a career in writing. Although he mainly traveled alongside the heroes of his novels, in real life Jules Verne did become a member of the French Geographical Society. It can be said that he was a pioneer traveler into the fantastic world of wonders and the unexplored. In collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, Jules Verne created a whole series of "Extraordinary Voyages," which began with the novel "Five Weeks in a Balloon." Like almost everything else written by Verne, this captivating story of a flight over Africa can be called an adventure novel. Incredible discoveries, unexpected dangers, the courage and bravery of the heroes - all of this attracts readers to this work even today. The illustrations in this edition were done by the remarkable artist Pyotr Ivanovich Lugansky. He was a great admirer of Jules Verne's work. In the post-war years, Lugansky's illustrations adorned Soviet editions of famous books such as "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," "The Mysterious Island," and "The Children of Captain Grant." During the artist's lifetime, six editions of "The Children of Captain Grant" were released, each with different illustrations. Through these and other books by Jules Verne, the unfamiliar and alluring world where brave heroes and tireless explorers navigated dense jungles, sailed the seas on their ships, and flew over Africa in a hot air balloon was revealed to Russian readers. All these enchanting scenes could be seen firsthand thanks to Lugansky's talent. Where and how did he study the nature he painted? Did he study the fashion of the 19th century? Did he flip through old albums? Or did his creative imagination allow him to accurately reproduce scenes of life he had never seen in person? After all, Pyotr Ivanovich never left his homeland. He was born in 1911, graduated from one of Ukraine's oldest art schools - a unique equivalent of the Stieglitz School in St. Petersburg. He then worked at Leningrad's "Uchpedgiz." After the war, illustrating books became the artist's main creative pursuit. He illustrated works by Kaverin, Belyaev, Stevenson, and Mayne Reid. Nevertheless, Jules Verne always remained his favorite writer.
