The book of the famous Soviet writer Yuri Sergeevich Rytkheu (1930-2008) includes four works about the inhabitants of the harsh polar region of Chukotka. The first story, "The Most Beautiful Ships," is based on the fate of three generations of a Chukotka family. The second story, "The Wolverine's Trail," is about how not everyone was pleased with the benefits of civilization that appeared in Chukotka settlements during Soviet times. The third story, "When the Whales Leave," is about a man who is left alone in the vast expanse of the endless tundra and his own soul because he betrayed his friends and loved ones, all those who helped him in a difficult moment. The tale "The Keeper of the Fire" is about the fate of a simple taiga hunter who dedicated his life to serving people.
