In the book of A.B. Galkina "Tarkovsky. Instructions for the viewer, or how to watch a genius? " The work of the famous film director Andrei Tarkovsky in the context of Russian and world culture is investigated.
All seven films of Tarkovsky, as well as his theatrical production of the Shakespearean "Hamlet" in the Lenkom Theater, according to the author, form a harmonious artistic whole, similar to the baha fugue. Favorite directorial images, ideas, leitmotives, cultural associations go from the film to the film and interact with each other, like the voices and melodies of one grandiose cinematic symphony.
A.B. Galkin deciphens complex symbols and mythological subtexts laid in the director’s films. The author correlates the bright biographical episodes of Tarkovsky’s life with the search for a new cinema language. The filmmaker appears in the book as the ruler of the thoughts of the era of the twentieth century and at the same time as its film scriptor.
